Jenice Mattek: This is More Than Your Pelvic Floor

We were blown away by our interview with Jenice Mattek, and we think it is one of our most informative and interesting sessions to date.  Don’t let the subject matter scare you away- we all have a core and a pelvic floor and what you may be living with as normal, might just not be.  Jenice is an author (“What Lies Beneath: The Under-Realized Effects of Breast, Abdominal and Pelvic Surgeries”) , a Licensed Clinical Massage Therapist and Occupational Therapy Assistant and an Integrative Movement Specialist.

Getting right to the point,, if you even experience  so much as a “dribble” when you cough, sneeze, exercise or jump, you need to know that it is not normal and it needs to be addressed. Remember, just because it may be common, does not mean it is okay.  And surprise..kegels, engaging your abs or pelvic floor  are not always the answer. 

A weak core and/or pelvic floor means things are not functioning  the way the need to be. A good example of this is when people think (or are told)  if they have lower back pain they need to strengthen their core, however, most of the time that’s just going to cause more lower back pain. You want to look at the cause of the problems and/or pain instead of just focusing on strengthening. 

We asked Jenice if there was a specific exercise she would suggest. She said that the best core exercise is one that you can do successfully and one that helps you to achieve the response you’re looking for. The NUMBER ONE exercise Jenice likes to have her clients do is to learn how to breathe correctly.  While everyone obviously has to breathe, did you know that many people do not breathe correctly?  Whether you have back pain, foot pain or pelvic floor issues- you must know how to breathe correctly in order to address any of those issues. Jenice shows us how to breathe correctly ( and how breathing incorrectly affects us) in the video.

Jenice’s advice for aging enthusiastically is to have a good attitude. A good attitude will change the tone of your life drastically. She also suggests you actively live your life according to what feels right to you and surround yourself with people who bring you joy and make you feel good.
