Laurette Kittle of Walker & Wade: Find Your Why and Everything will Follow

We have talked to many people and have found a common theme: passion. What makes “growing up” fun is when you find something later in your life that you are passionate about when you weren’t expecting it.

Today’s interview is with Laurette Kittle of the clothing line Walker & Wade. At the age of 60, Laurette started her own company designing a “beach style” clothing line with flowing dresses, caftans, tunics and beach pants. She had previously designed fabric for over 25 years and had always had an interest in color and fashion.

While on vacation in Bali, Laurette met a tailor and decided to design some clothing she would have liked to have worn on the trip and he made them. She enjoyed the beach style and had been looking for something she could wear straight from the beach to dinner and still look put together. She wore her designs back in her hometown and got a ton of positive comments and her friends and family encouraged her to start a business.

Laurette shares some astute thoughts on living and business. She thinks it is key that as we age we move out of our comfort zones and try new things. She believes in pushing away the fear and start with “Why?” She suggests you ask  “why do you want to do it” and to “find the answer deep inside”. Her designs illustrate her philosophy that “any woman is a goddess, no matter what age”. When starting a company, Laurette advises us to think global, start local. She also believes one of the keys to success is to listen to the customer. We are thankful Laurette followed her own advice “ even if you have no idea what you are doing it is worth it to try” because we are truly impressed by her business acumen and we love her Walker & Wade dresses.

We asked Laurette what she thought the best way to age enthusiastically was. She said, “Keeping active is the key to aging enthusiastically, both mentally and physically. When you are really engaged in something you don’t really have time to think about your aging. It is good to focus your mind and energy on other things. Practicing gratitude is super important. If you get up every day thinking about the things you are lucky to have it will take you a long way”.

We are grateful to know Laurette and have the opportunity to share her with you.

I love Walker and Wade cloths and purchased two more of her dresses at a show on the Cape last summer.
